Just recently, I installed a new Fuel Pump Assembly on my '02 FLSTFI Fatboy after sitting in the garage for 2 months while waiting for the part to arrive. the tank was cleaned before installation. When I fired up the bike, however, the engine went into a high idle for 10 minutes or more after settling into its usual normal idle. I noticed that during this high idling, whenever I flipped open the throttle even a little, the engine shut off. I also noticed that there was a leak in the quick-connect fitting where the check valve is housed. I tried to put an o ring and snapped it back in place. The leaking somewhat stopped. But the next day, it leaked again and engine went into high idle again. I have no scanalyzer so I had the injectors cleaned and the wirings from the ECM checked. The throttle cables were also checked. Still the same thing happened when either starting from a cold start or hot restart. The bike ran fine before the previous fuel pump developed trouble (the gasoline inside started to develop gum and clogged the fuel pump because of a few months not using it). the bike has a pair of Screamin Eagle Slip on mufflers and the air cleaner is stock HD.However now that I have installed a new fuel pump assembly, another problem cropped up. Could it be the leak in the quick connect fitting? or something else?
I tried the self diagmostic on the console odometer, and it displayed the letters PPU, another press of the odometer reset and it displayed the numbers 82883. Is this a part number or something connected with fault code? Can somebody help please? Thanks.
the only advice i have is buy a ne quick conect both parts i changed my bars and dxed by fuel line and after i reconected it i had probloms not the same as you bet my bike would rune fine then when i stoped it wouldent restart the o ring got pinched and vut off fuel flow u may have dumthing caught int your manifold from that
Sounds like a vacuum leak due to sucking air in through the leaking quick disconnect fitting. I say replace the quick disconnect fitting and I bet your problem will go away.
Thanks guys. I guess its the leak in quick connect fitting thats causing all these troubles from hard starting to intermittent high idling. Ill have to wait another month till I get it after I order it from the U.S and have it mailed to the Philippines. i really love my fatboy
Hi. I copied the instuctions on how to get the codes without a scanalyzer. Thanks. I shall try it this week. By the way, those are cool-looking kickass lowered 3 black fatboys there. Very nice customs! I like the way they were set up. Mime is lowered too but basically stock. Regards to the group there. Welcome to the Philippines!
Thanks Oct1949.I ordered the quick connect fitting just this morning.Hope to get it in about 2 weeks time. It costs $37.00. You have a shiny Softail Custom there. A sleek dresser!
Hey Anubiss, Id like to extend my thanks from the Philippines all the way to you for helping me get rid of the intermittent high idling problem. And this goes to the others who have shared their wisdom. I went on to download the DTC Diagnostic Trouble Codes and performed the procedure with the help of my mechanic. The codes pointed to a faulty ENGINE TEMPERATURE SENSOR! I ordered the part togehter with the quick connect fitting and when everything was installed, the bike idled back to normal and ran fine thereafter.. Thanks to you guys and more power to HD-Forums!!
