Default Break in/maintenance schedule advise

I was wondering if the break in procedure for the bikes are similar to the Cars.. Taking it easy for the first 1k miles or so, put load at low rpms and get the engine to decelerate while in gear to ensure piston ring sitting properly. I also read and i dont recall where that the scheduled maintenance indluding oil changes were every 5k miles, the first one being at 1k then 5k, then 10k... Can anyone correct this info if not correct. I was planning it on taking it to the dealer to get its first tune up since i believe thy perform several other adjustments to the clutch cable.. accel.. and other important details. What do you guys recommend? Thanks

That's all pretty much correct. You're on the right track.

In all reality though, they should have covered all of that when you took delivery on the bike. Sounds like they wanted your check and kicked you out the door with your bike ASAP.

service should be covered in your owners manual, if not, pick up a Service Manual. Posted below is a copy of the 2007 Softail Service schedule...

Depends really. When I bought my bike they gave me a discount for doing the first service at the dealer that was under $200. If you local indy guy can do that all for less than that, then I would probably go with the indy. I dont have much faith in any of my local Harley's, and the one I bought it from are pretty bad. Keep receipts for everything.

After the first service, start picking up some tools and stuff to start doing things yourself, it will pay off in the long run. I didnt know anything about bikes, but in the past two years have done a lot of things myself and when it comes down to it, they are just using the service manual and tools that you can borrow/purchase.

Any questions I have ever had, have always been answered on here. Its a great resource to use.

Post make model year of bike and any pictures!
