They do work. I tipped over my 01 classic twice now in nine years with minimal damage. Otherwise would have trashed the tanks so we did put one on the wifes deluxe

I tipped mine over just enough to lean on the engine guard and floorboards, it never went to the ground because they stopped it.

+1. Mine did have a few minor scratches and blemishes, nothing major. Worth much more than $50. Never really cared for the look, but I kinda like them now... beefs up the front with the passing lamps.

I got a nice one from Linby. Its called the multi-bar. I really like it. It was around $250, but its solid and looks great. Don't buy a cheap one. Your buying it for protection.

Engine guards are great if you drop the bike in your garage or at a stop sign, etc.
That being said, you are more likely to get worse injures, in a crash if you have engine guards, then if you don't. I know that doesn't sound logical, but that is what independent studies have found.
That is probably the reason they can't call them crash bars.
If they did provide more protection, you can bet the government and insurance companies would mandate that all motorcycles come equipped with them.

Yeah, they will save your chrome if you dump it in the garage. But I personally do not like the way they look on most bikes.

I got one a while back. the highway pegs make it worth it. The only bad thing about it is it will spook you if you drag it. The floorboards tilt up, but the bar sure as hell doesn't.
