I think it was Jesse James who said, "If it don't fit in my pockets, it ain't goin'!" Of course, ride whichever you wish, as long as it's only got 2 wheels! It's a great trip. (By the way, if you're trying to find it on a map, you'll have better luck looking for Sturgis.... I don't think there will be many bikes in "Sturges")
I'm sure you will ride through Custer State Park and there you will see buffalo. It is really worth the ride; beautiful scenery. The buffalo may be on the road. DO NOT challenge them! The things are dumb as a rock but also mean as hell when disturbed.
There is a lone bull there that you will find out by himself. Give him a wide berth. He gored two riders last year that tried to stop and take his picture. He is one mean SOB.
Also be sure to ride Spearfish Canyon both directions.
Very cool - a dream trip for me personaly. Always wanted to experience a rally that is not in my backyard. I was curious how you were planning on breaking up the trip? How many miles a day or what are your destination goals. Where will your first day take ya. Checking out the map it looks like 4 days out? Let us know and have a safe ride. Good idea on the bike choice - don't think such a long ride would be fun with out a shield.
I would bet Jessie James had a support truck/film crew follow him on his trips and hauls his gear for him. Could be way off but I had his coin I would do the same.

Yeah, I'm going to Sturgis too. Not sure where Sturges is.
Heading out from Seattle next Wed 7/29. See y'all there!
I stay in the same house that we rent every year. I ship my cloths there a couple days before I leave and the day I leave I ship them back out to home. I use a Kuryaqan bar bag 9"x16" to carry a pair of jeans, shirt, undies, cigs, ect. Everything else I ship and it ain't that much $ plus I always get a bunch of t-shirts to have to bring back. Shipping works out good for me! You might think about it.
We’re heading out to Sturgis on the 31st and be staying at Trout Heaven for 5 days. Then a slow poke ride home through Cody, Yellowstone, Craters of the Moon, Bend and then back to Portland. I’ll be riding my 2006 FXST with a removable windshield. I just put on some Lindby crash bars so I can stretch my legs. I used a Tour Master large sissy bar bag and two barrel bags behind me for back support.
