Default Swing arm pivot bolt question

A buddy of mine has a '98 Fat Boy and he wants to change out the stock exhaust headers for some Vance and Hines. The question is: when you take out the pivot bolt to take of the stock exhaust hangar, I am assuming the back tire should be off the ground to relieve the weight, but will the swing arm still shift inside of the frame, or will it stay there so he can put the bolt right back in? Also does he have to get a shorter bolt? Any help is appreciated.
