1993 softail 'mooglide'(flstn) having issues. Bike won't start. First, clicking repeatedly now just one click when i hit the start button. Battery voltage is 12.7v (3 month old interstate), all lights and horn working well. ITS NOT THE BATTERY!!! Anyway, few things i wanted to check before i tow it to my mechanic. Want to check starter relay but how in god's name do you gain access to it. It appears i have to remove the oil tank just to test this relay. Is there any other way to gain access to it. It's located behind the battery-behind the starter and solenoid. What a pain in the a$$. Please help.
Sounds like the battery :-) Like he said, check grounding and all connections. A **** battery can still read 12.7 v Try jumping it off your car and that will let you know for sure about the battery.
Might have better luck jumping off another bike or four wheeler. Not sure what the difference in battery types between car and bike can do to the bike battery and that is why I always used another bike for a jump if I had to. Maybe I'm just paranoid....not sure.
I know you're saying it's not the battery but I'm gonna say charge that battery up before you do anything. Here's a link to a thread I had started with a similar problem. https://www.hdforums.com/forum/elect...ad-clutch.html
Also wanted to mention, I tried to jump start it off a 4-wheeler with a good battery, just getting a rapid clicking noise. Again, i'm pretty sure its not the battery, but i'm going to take it to autozone today to get it load tested just to be sure. I just don't want to spend another 100$ on a battery i don't need if i'm going to have to throw out a couple hundred on a starter/solenoid combo or rebuild.
Since you are fairly sure the battery is OK then I would double check all the connections. A few years ago I had a truck that did about the same thing and it turned out to be a bad negitive battery cable. It had gotten corroision under the insulation, where you could see it, but when you read it out it would show resistance.
Jump starting doesn't always work. I had a car with a good battery charge up my battery for like 10 minutes but that still didn't work. Just got a rapid clicking noise. I took it to autozone to get a load test like you did and they said the battery was fine, but while I was there, I bought a charger anyway. After putting the battery on the charger overnight, I put the battery back in the bike, and it fired up right away. Get a charger.
