New Softail Standard, 1st HD - now with pics
Enough background...my questions is: I know the bike was running lean as I was getting popping while off the gas, but is there long term damage that was done with this set-up? Like I said, the dealer told me I'd be fine and that it would actually be better to get some break in miles on before the dyno...but I didn't like the way it was running all weekend and I'm a bit concerned.
Anyway, I greatly appreciate the feedback and I look forward to spending lots of time on this board. Once I get a picture of the bike, I will post it.
Yes it was running lean but unless you really beat on it you didn't hurt it.
Have fun.
You'll have fun with the SERT trust me.

I doubt whether you did any damage. I ran about 3 tanks of 87 octane in mine before I REMEMBERED that it takes high octane. (Gettin' older!) A few tanks of 93 really made a difference in the performance AND sound.
Now, my V&H straightshots have popped and growled on deceleration from the onset. They did it even more when I got it back from the 1,500 mile checkup, and are doing it even MORE as I put the miles on. The sound doesn't bother me--I kinda like it. But, does it mean that something's out of whack with my mapping? The exhaust pipe is a good gold under the heat shield.
By the way, for others reading this post, the V&H straightshots are some LOUD pipes (I did not want to buy the optional baffles). If you're wantin' low and mellow, these aint it! If you're wantin' loud pipes that clap like thunder when you accelerate (more than growl), here you go. These pipes make my bike WANT to go fast, and my riding style changes with it, for better or worse.

Have you seen the inspiration pic at HD?
