Default Drag pipes - experience /advice

Hi,

I am thinking of putting Arlen Ness Slash ness drag pipes on my '06 Softail standard and was wondering if anyone else has done this and what their experience was (eg is there any adverse effect on performance etc). Also as I have a pillion for a large part of the time has anyone found that they are inconvient for the passenage as they sit very high at the rear end.

Thanks

Stu

Greetings from a former resident of PE38

I've never run drags in any of the bikes I've ever owned. I've known a few people that have burned out a valve or two because they never had their pipes baffled to keep some back pressure in the engine.

They're just loud as hell and will certainly bring you the unwanted attention of the police.

just my .02

Im also not a big fan of drag pipes. Unless you have the engine properly setup, you're going to loose low end power with them. Drag pipes by nature are designed to make more power at higher speeds. They are made for racing applications. If you are looking for more useable power for regular street riding, I'd look at a pipe that has more back pressure but still a very straignt through design. ie. Vance & Hines, Hooker, Screamin Eagle's, Khrome Werks, etc. All are very good pipes and in my humble opinion, they all sound better than drag pipes too. Drag pipes are LOUD! But they do not have good sound quality. One more thing I've noticed about drag pipes on setups that are virtually stock, they all turn blue. Just my .02....

According to the local dealer and the Arlen Ness website these pipes aren't straight-through and are baffled (?). I have heard them on a Deuce and they are about the same noise level as the SEII's I have on at the moment which is quieter than the V&H short shots. Also I was told that the chip replacement I had for the Stage 1 tuning would be OK for the Arlen Ness pipes?

Stu..Checked those pipes out and they are sweet looking. I have a feeling they are not the "traditional" drag pipe because of the baffles and design that they have. Why don't you contact Arlen Ness's tech support with yoru questions. Maybe they can help you out. They don't have a tech phone number but they do have a tech email. Here it is: contact@arlenness.com

Good luck!
