i'm needing to get a new rear tire for my 03 night train but i'm not sure what i should get. i've got a metzler me880 on there right now but i haven't got a lot of miles out of it (i've been know to get on the gas alittle hard here and there) by looking at the tread you can tell that i ride in alot of strait lines and not a lot of curves since the tire is like new on the edge and maybe an 1/8" of tread in the middle. i talked with a guy at a local shop and he told me to go with an avon but i'm not sure. what would you guys recommend?? also i the stock tire is a 150, would a 160 fit on the bike or would it be to tight??
I have an 04. Right now, I have a Deuce wheel on the back with a stock 160 on it. It fits great (with a little of customizing) and looks 100% better. You can easily stick a Metz 160 on there with no mods I think. (Metz tires run narrow) When I wear out my current 160, I plan to put on a 170 in the newer HD Dunlop tread (I think its a D407) The 407 has a hard center for longer life with a soft outside for cornering.
If you check out my album you can see some pics of the 160 on my bike.
Centering the tire in the fender is pretty easy. All you need is a Deuce spacer for the left side and to do a little bit of grinding on the caliper. If you need help, shoot me a pm and I can give you much more detailed information on the conversion.
the dunlop with the hard center d407 have softer sides over the original touring tire.
not sure how that will compare to just stock tire on softail. I have the new dunlop roadsmart tire that has sport tread but harder center. i have a little over 1000 miles and love them. wet and gravel are no problem. they still show no wear so i think they will last long. they are also lower profile and reduced the gear ratio to a very usable rpm
the 09 night train use the same as my 07 fatboy, 200/55-17
Avon's and Metzler's will have similar mileage, but are both far stickier than the d402's. Don't know about the newer lops, never have tried them. Stickier is better in my book any day, as the tires are what stick me to the ground.
