Default lowering a softail / neutral problem

Need a little help. I have an '87 Heritage Softail and would like to lower the rear. My nephew had an '03 Heritage and he has a set of adjustable shocks he will give me for my ride. Mine has the shocks with a fluid resevoir. So here's the question, can I eliminate my old system and upgrade to the'03? Has anyone done this before? Easy, PITA, 1 six pack or more? Also, my old girl is a almost impossible to get into neutral. When it is running, you have to be rolling at 8 to 10 mph with gentle pressure on the shift lever for it to pop into neutral. Any faster or slower it just won't go. With the motor shut off it is no problem, just rock it back once and it pops right in. I have adjusted the clutch in just about every position possible with no improvement. Any help would be appreciated because I have no turn signals, I need to keep my hand on the clutch lever. I searched the forums for both of these topics, but, didn't really come up with anything.

Thanks in advance,

Joechief
