Unhappy What the hell!? Do I need a tuner?

sorry to meme a decomposing horse here, but I believe I am in need of a tuner.

Situation - My bike is an 07 Softail Standard. Aside from the Hooker Troublemakers, the motor is stock. Stock A/C etc. Upon putting the pipes on, I took it over and got it flashed. It was cool, then I noticed a small flame coming from the tips. As cool as it is to blow flames, its not right. I found that one of my exhaust flange nuts had vibrated loose. Tightened, and its all good. So, a couple months down the road now. When starting it at the house, I can pull out of the drive and start to leave the neighborhood when it seems like its bogged down. I dont go out of 3rd usually, sometimes 2nd when leavin the "hood". I had it die on me once right around the corner from my house. It was acting like a carbd vehicle when you flood the bowl. When on the road, rolling low 50's in 5th, and I go to twist some throttle, it seems like it hesitates. If I go from cruise to almost WFO, it definately lags, then slowly catches up to what my hand is telling it to do. NOT like it used to be. I will admit, I can tend to make myself paranoid when Im riding and I feel something, or hear something that sounds off, I guess Im just noid about hurting the motor if I am truly in need of some tune work.

Question - If I indeed need a tuner, what are the less expensive alternatives. As of yet, I have not begun to **** 20's . . . that I know. So money is DEFINATELY something to consider, as Im sure it is for a lot of people on here. I have found the Arlen Ness Big Shot adjustable tuner, 260. Total Fuel Systems Technologies, Power Commander, V&H Fuel Pack etc. I am a bargain shopper, and an ebayer, but dont want to buy a piece of **** box with wires coming out of it that doesnt work. I've heard good things about RevTech DFO, those can be found for a descent price. All input is MUCH appreciated. I can budget around 2 - 250 bucks for this. What is the best bang for my buck?>??? Thanks guys.

Try changing the air cleaner first.....The stock one isn't going to breathe at all and is probably contributing to the issue....

So maybe my stock A/C isnt moving the air that the pipes are trying to put out? Interesting. Hadn't thought of that. Then wont I definitely need a tuner? I was eyeing the big sucker for a mod down the road. Maybe I should move that up in the list. Thanks a lot for the input dude.

Where is South Alabam are you? I am in Fairhope. Anyway, I have the TTS and it works great. I think I paid around 450 (including cables) for it and it allows you to tune it yourself without a dyno. You would need a laptop and a backpack though. The nice thing about it is that you just plug it into the stock ecm and it reprograms it. No taking the bike apart, nothing to stuff and hide..... just software. I knew nothing about tuning and it was pretty easy to figure it all out. If you go this route, I'd be glad to help ya out.

tataly agree with the A/C,change it,but a tuner will definatly help,a fuel pak is about the cheapest & user freindly(but has alot of limitations, maybe 1 step above a flash),thundermax is the best, but very pricy.a powercommander is your best bet.be real carefull buying off ebay, dont know what your getting

Yes, the pipes opened up the air going out, but the AC won't let air in.....

It should improve things.....

If that's all you want to do, then you can probably get away the flash from HD.....But a good tuner will always dial the bike in perfectly...

Im in Theodore, just south of Mobile. I appreciate the invite to help. Will take you up on that when the tuner comes into play. The laptop and backpack isnt a problem. We should meet up and ride some time. I think I met you here and hopped over the the mobile hd forum a while back. Im doing the Angel ride coming up in November.

Im a bit noid about buyin this off of ebay. It seems it would be real easy for someone to make a "tuner" that doesnt do **** and put your money in their pocket. I guess the best route for me would be to pick up and tuner and put the A/C next on the list. I had a bunch of wants as Im converting my Standard to a "dark" standard. Powder, etc. But its pointless to do that if the bike isnt running right. Needs over wants right now I guess.

Ive flashed from HD twice now. Hasnt seemed to do enough. So I am getting too much fuel, not enough air right? How about the DFO??

Thanks guys.

The DFO that I have seen requires cutting into the stock harness....I don;t like that idea..maybe it has changed...

IMHO, you would do justice by changing the AC first.

Then look up different tuners...Because any mods you do after the tuner will require adjustments to it..

Also look at Fuel Moto on this site and on Ebay for great prices on a power commander

Cool, so I guess the question is . . . . If I throw a big sucker on before doing a tune, will it run alraight??? Im cool with going that route as long as it doesnt run like **** between then and when I get a tuner.

Damn - just looked at fuel moto - didnt realize you can get a PC for 260! Thats a PClll, good enough for what Im doing??

I'm assuming the flash you got from HD was a Stage 1...Stage 1 assumes pipes and an Air cleaner....

Doing the AC now should bring it close to what HD assumes.

It will most likely still run lean, but you should see improvement right away..

After that, if you still want to put a tuner on there see Fuel Moto.

The PCIII will be perfect....Fuel moto can put a map on there based on what your running for mods.... A canned map is never perfect.....The only way to get it perfect is get some dyno time and have a qualified guy custom map it.....
