Good luck for the Op, at least you wil be repairing over the winter for the next bout of good weather. I had the nerves stripped out of my right foot 2 yrs ago, it was a bit odd at first with no feel on the back brake, however the human body and mind is a fantastic thing and we can adapt to anything, just take your time, no running before walking and dont get frutrated.

Well I am out of surgery and all went well. I had a loose bone about the size of a dime floating around as well as cartlidge issues. They did not seize the joint but did drill several holes in the bone to get scare tissue to grow.
They did a nerve block that left no felling in my leg from my knee down for 24 hours. I could not move my toes or feel a damn thing. Reddog I do not know how you do it. It was seriously freaking me out to look at my toes try to make them move and nothing!!! My wife would touch them and I could not feel a thing. Then the block wore off and holy crap I wish the block would have lasted longer. I now I sit in a chair high as a kit watching bad midday TV!
Thanks for all the positive comments but I think I can ride w/ this... I just need to find a spot to put my crutches and blow every stop sign and red light....

Do you have a heel shifter?
You probably don't wanna take advice from me.... I was out driving my manual shift Mustang and walking without crutches 5 days after ACL reconstruction.
I had growths forming on the nerve's, putting pressure on the nerve's themselves causing pain. It came on over a number of years. only noticed it at first when I was running. I used to do 1/2 marathons on a regular basis, but then the mileage came down due to the pain. By the time I saw the Dr the nerves were in hell of a state, it started to cause problems walking in the end. The surgen was going to just remove the growths but it was so bad the decision was to remove the nerves up to the heel. At first it was odd having no feeling and then on occassions 'ghost' feelings but you get used to it. The worst thing is ocassionaly my foot feels like its on fire, now that makes me wince. Makes using the back brake interesting to. I guage it with the pressure at my ankle now. Like I said you can get use to anything over time, you just dont let it effect you.
