I saw a bike that really inspired me the other day. It was an Exile called Brown Pearl. It takes a lot of work to make something new look old. Over the weekend, I was testing out different chemicals on my copper handle bars and I ordered some acids for my aluminum gas cap. After turning the handle bars blue and green a few times, I finally got it right. In fact the blue and green are gone, but left the bars with a cool marbling effect. I think I need to go darker though. I think I want to blur the line between brown and black. Here's where I am so far:
These riser caps are going be replaced with gold cross riser caps.
I darkened it a little more today, and the marbling seems to get more intense the darker I go. It's hard to catch all thats going on in there with the camera unless I get up real close. The lighting takes away from it, but you get the idea. Once it is exactly as I want it, I may clear coat it. I haven't decided yet.
I plan on turning the aluminum gas cap a rusty brown. That will definitely be clear coated as I dont want any rusty metal flaking off into the gas tank.
