Question Slip on's

Just orded V&H slip on's yesterday for my Night Train, and the Dealer said I should use the V&H fuel pack with it. I said no thanks, considering the pipes alone cost 450.00, I didn't think I needed to spend another 400.00 because the bike already has a stage one kit installed. Figured I would install the pipes then ride it and see how it runs first. I guess my question is, the fuelpack really needed?

I would say no as long as you are only doing the pipes

You can get them for $200 so I don't know if the dealer gave you that $400 number, but that is crazy. I would wait and see if you are happy with the slip ons. You will probably go with a full system eventually and then you would be better off with something that can be tuned (Power Commander).

The bike originally came with a 2into1 thunderheader, I switched it back to 2 into2 with s.e. slip ons. Pretty sure it is still tuned to the Thunderheader. And that price I quoted is Canadian money. Should have mentioned that.

i have done alot of research into the slip-ons and even the dealer told me that there is NO NEED for fuel management when only doing slip-ons with a max of 1.75" baffle. Maybe the service guy did not know the history of your bike or ??

When I bought my 09 Fatboy, it had a stage 1 download /air & S.E. slip-on the dealer installed the mufflers /air and did the download but i changed to 2" Rush (I like). I did contact the dealer to ask if there would be an issue with the Rush 2" and he said that it would not be.

I wouldn't run a stage 1 and a set of new mufflers,The bike will run on the lean side that could eventually lead to scorched cylinders from running too lean.I have a friend that dynos Harley's for a living,he'd seen that I had put pipes on my 09 FLHX and said I'd better be looking into a tuner before I add the AC or I risk ruin. His suggestion is the Commander.

This is what I have been told also by the dealer if you change the air or pipes then you need to deal with F/M but if only slip-ons its NP 1.75" max.

Another question is if going from upgraded pipes back to stock do you need to do a F/M download??? it may very well be a huge fn $$$$ grab.
after reading countless threads and asking people that know WTF they are talking about with years of experience ( i don't) they say that the stock F/M may be able to compensate for the % of difference, MAYBE, so for the sake of $200 is it worth the risk???

Yeah, I'm a little confused. You said the bike had a stage 1 kit which is usually exhaust, a/c and a fuel management system. I guess you don't have the f/m which is not a full stage 1 upgrade. If you just have exhaust and a/c, you can usually get away with the stage 1 download but if you do a lot of research, you will see that the bike will most likely run lean (and hot) so a fuel management system is highly recommended. Most get a V&H fuel pack if you know you won't be doing any more upgrades. If more upgrades are in the future, you need a Power Commander, SERT etc. Also, $400 for a V&H fuel pack is way off price. I believe they are around $200 and you can get a PC for around $300.
