When I flipped the mirrors under the bars, I tried running just one on the left. After about 20 miles of looking over my right shoulder to see who was back there, I put the right side mirror back on.
I grew up in LA traffic & had only 1 mirror (all that was required back then) & never even thought about it. It's a matter of getting used to always looking over the shoulder. Now however, I'm not as quick (mentally or physically) & need all the help I can get, so it's 2 for me. I did flip them though & it took a little getting used to raising my arm slightly in order to see anything but again, you can get used to anything.
The question surprises me : I couldn't image only 1 mirror as vehicles may come from left or from right. When riding in heavy traffic, it is a security requirement. A must have.

Back in the day, we were running faster than traffic, especially when it was heavy, so all our attention was on what's ahead.. ah yes, the good old lane splitting days!
