08 Fatboy 10k Maintenance Experience
I did the 10k mi service on mine this weekend. It was not too difficult, just a little time consuming. Anyway I thought I would share some of my observations here. Regarding the fluids, the motor took 2.8qts, and the other two took 1qt ea (all Amsoil MCV 20/50). The transmission drain plug seems to not be perfecly centered between the shocks. I could get my socket on it to break it loose but had to partially remove it when I unscrewed the plug or it would bind on one of the shocks. The old fluid came out clear with minimal shavings on the magnet. The primary was also relatively clean. I like the little opening they have for the funnel inside the primary case when you pull the derby cover off. I also did the clutch adjustment procedure and found it was not really necessary since the adjuster screw only turned in about 1/2 a turn (the spec is to turn it out 1/2 turn). Really at 10k the clutch should have minimal wear. I found most of the fasteners were fine. I pulled the air filter and found a small amount of oil on the air filter mount plate. Looks like it came from the breather tubes. I also cleaned the throttle body with some Sea Foam since it was a little dirty. I had not looked at it since I installed the SE air intake at 2500mi as part of the stage 1 upgrade. The most ridiculous procedure in my opinion is the steering head bearing adjustment. I wonder if the mechanics actually follow this. At least with mine the fall off was not symmetric with all the cables attached. I did remove the clutch cable from the frame mount, but that did not help. I think common sense comes to play here and mine were ok. I am happy to have saved about $500 (well minus the oil) over the typical dealer cost.
Congrats - you saved some coin and gained the pride of doing it yourself. I did the 10k on my '08 Night Train and had an identical experience to yours. When I did the 5k, I discovered the stem nut way way under-torqued, so I was extra careful at 10k.
