Exactly...I think my first Lego set came with a 3/8 allen.....definitely NOT a specialty tool.

You think tools for your Harley are expensive?Try being an auto technician. On top of that I own an independant 5 bay shop.My yearly tool and equipment bill is huge.Probably 1/2 what some people make in a year.Only I get to write it off.Like said above tools are an investment and it beats paying the dealer!

But when you pay $45 for a specialty tool, and save $$ over what it would cost to have the dealer do the job, it's a pretty good investment, imo. Then you have the tool if you need it again, or can help out a bud that may end up needing it.

I have to disagree...a bit... Boats with issues get that way because people tinker when they have no business doing so. (...applies to cars and bikes also) Good TRAVELING marine mechanics are hard to find and this forces many to tinker themselves or find a wannabe mechanic to make a mess... I mean fix their boat. As far as specialty tools, the drives, the cables maybe but other than that, basic tools are fine for just about everything. Just my take but boats are another topic. So back to the topic... oh yeah... Big allens are a specialty tool.

I guess you have no real idea about the cost of owning a boat, other than a canoe. I spend nearly a grand a year just on storage and normal maintenance costs. To clue you in, I was making a comparison about the cost of toys, not the cost of tools. However, price the tool you need to disassemble an out-drive, try and do that with your little bag of tricks.
I don't tinker with anything, just to let you know. It does not take a exceptionally bright person to work on boats or Harleys.

It's not just HD, it's marketing. I'd still buy the specialty tool and save on the labor, then pass the savings on to my bro's when they need it.

The one thing that bugs is when they switch to metric and the manual fails to mention it. Lucky for me I have Yamaha ATV toys and have invested in metric tools also.
