Inner Wheel Spacer

Does anyone know if the inner wheel spacer has to be made of a certain material (maybe steel)? I need a 3/4 ID spacer 6 inches long that I can turn down to a custom length. Only ones I can find are stainless steel which mention outer wheel spacer. Any help by one of you experts would be greatly appreciated. Will more than likely have to have one made.

I would think stainless would be the way to go, it is strong and won't corrode like plain steel and alumium would be a little soft for this purpose.

Stainless steel would be great for this. And use some grease or anti seize on the axle to make it easier to get apart next time. Any after market catalog sells these or check your local independent shop.
