Thought I should run this by the board before trying to tackle this problem.
My 97 Classic seems to me to be running rich. Getting 30MPG which is pretty low. 10,500K miles with no additional mod's except that the previous owner "self" installed SEII slipon exhaust, SE ignition and rejetted with a Dynojet package.
The bike just doesn't seem to me to be burning all the fuel it is consuming; very rich exhaust. Also, top speed is about 80-85MPG before she starts to break-up. Otherwise she runs strong, minimal vibration, plenty of low end torque and smooth. Occasional pop on decel and a little rough (jerky) at very low speed/RPM under 2K.
So what do you think and where would you start with this problem?
Have you pulled the plugs to see what they look like? Do they both look alike? Do they show a rich condition? If they look the same then I would turn towards the carb. If one looks normal and one show to be rich then I would look at the ignition. This is just a start, I'm sure others will join in with better advice as time goes on.
I think the milage and top speed are very low. I really think you have a ignition or carb problem. If one of your plugs are fouled that could be causing the poor gas mileage and low top speed. If both plugs look good I would pull the bowl off the carb and inspect the main jet and needle to see if the main jet has become loose.
