VHT actually makes an exhaust pipe paint. You have to bake it on by letting the bike run for so long (can't remember how many minutes) and then letting it sit for so long and repeating the process a few times. Some people on here have used it and say it works great. I've got some, but haven't used it yet.
I used it on my pipes and followed the instructions for baking it when the pipes are still on. That way my wife didn't yell at me. Just follow the instructions. I have a ton of miles on my bike and have zero issues.
I used Flat Black Header paiint on mine. It worked well, but over the course of a year the flat black started looking flat dark grey at the hotter portions of the pipes.
The VHT Flameproof stuff hols up well but shows scratches because it's a flat style paint. Good thing is that all you gotta do is dust some over the scratches and it's back to normal. It's what I used on the pipes on the Shovel in my sig. You can see how they got shiny on the rear pipe where my jeans rub when I kick.
