Default Help With Side Mount License

Im trying to move my 2005 Softail Standards stock rear license plate over to the side via axle mount (I guess). I was wondering if anyone can answer the follwoing:

1. What size axle do I have on a 2005 Standard, is it a 3/4"? Need to know this when I purchase the bracket.
2. Do I need lighting for the side mount plate, I dont think I have one on the rear, just the tag window on the stop light lense. I dont want to run lighting if I dont have to.
3. Can I simply take my rear axle nut off without having the bike on a stand and put these brackets on, then just retighten the axle bolt?
4. Is there anything special to installing these?

Sorry for so many questions, I dont have a clue where to start with this. Thanks for everyones help!

A stock axle is 3/4".My advice would be to get a bracket that mounts to the swingarm. Anyway, what exactly are you buying? Manufacturer, make etc.? Need more details. A license plate has to be lit in order to pass inspection in most states. I wouldn't be messing with an axle without a service manual and a torque wrench. If you buy an aftermarket license plate holder, I got a Kuryakyn, the instructions including the electrical, are usually pretty easy to follow.

Try searching. There are hundreds of posts on this subject. Below is a link to the one I made myself. Easy to install. It mounts where the axle nut washer goes on the outside of the swingarm and took about 2 minutes to install. Be certain to torque when putting the nut back on. FYI, axle dimension doesn't always equate the dimension you need for the bracket as axle dimension is measured at the wheel, not the nut. My 09 axle is different on both ends as are many others.

I was looking into the Road 6 Customs curved plate bracket that everyone here seems to like. If anyone has installed this is there a different place to mount this (such as the rear passenger peg) or did you mount it to the axle?
