Well it all depends on what type of shoes you wear. When I go for short rides I use Adidas sport shoes and the shift lever is very easier to deal with other than my HD boots which sometimes does not even fit under the lever.
I would adjust your shift level to fit your HD boots. I know all of my controls are adjusted for my boots and if I do go for a ride in nike's there is just a little more room but I almost never ride in anything but my boots. I'm not one of these guys to jump on in shorts and tennis shoes. If I'm going for a ride other than around the block I will go in and change into pants and boots.

Thanks Bob, I'll do that. My short rides here is only a mile away to the beach and sure I don't use watershorts.
