Hi all - I have a couple of questions for those of you with true duals. I am looking at putting a set on my 08 Heritage because I love the look. I am a bit concerned because we ride 2up alot, and it looks like the left pipe might be a little uncomfortable for the passenger. Have any of you had issues with this?
Also, I know the duals are not the best choice for performance, but do they give you any advantage over the stock exhaust, or do you actually lose power?
I just put true dual head pipes on my '04 heritage. Using stock '02 Springer fishtail mufflers. I haven't noticed any performance change positive or negative compared to the stock springer head pipe setup. I do feel alot less heat on my right thigh. My wife has only ridden once with me since the swap, short distance, but I don't think there will be a problem on the left side for her.
I put TDs on ny FLHX, I love them... if you compare numbers you will see a loss in the low end... what I will tell you is that my riding buddies are not getting away from me... I am the back of the group, but its not because of lost power...
I love the sound, the look and the heat on each side, much cooler.
What I don't like, and it may not be an issue for you, is that taking of the access panel on the clutch side is a PITA...
I have true duals on an 08 deluxe. No heat on right side because it is now on the left!! But to be fair, I have very short legs. I am 5'1 with a 29" inseam. Gets so hot on the left side that sometimes it is unbearable. Oh, it only gets really hot in traffic, when you are riding it is no big deal. I have switched to synthetic oil and stage 1, no relief yet...
I ran TD's on my bike for several years. My wife ride's her own bike so I can't answer taht part, but I never had a problem with extra heat on the left side of the bike. Of course my bike is an 02 and does not suffer from the extreme temperatures as the newer bikes do.
You'll probably lose a little bottom end with true duals, but not a ton.
Pipe shouldn't be a problem for a passenger. I will warn you about wearing shorts, though. I never ride with shorts, but the one time I did I burnt my leg on the left side when getting back on. Won't wear shorts again.

LOL. The last time I burnt my leg on my exhaust was the last time i worse shorts on a bike too. It must have been about 15 years now, but I still remember it like it was yesterday. Sorry to Hi jack but I relate so much to that.
If you're going from a stock set-up to a true dual system, and do the full stage 1, you WILL NOT lose any power at all, as a matter of fact you'll GAIN 10-15% over a stock set-up. People are always saying how you'll "lose power", not compared to stock you won't. It will be a little less torque than a 2 into 1 system, but that's about it.
I have V&H true duals... I ran them with the stock baffles for a while and then installed the quiet baffles. When I did that I regained low end torque.
My wife has complained a time or two on really really hot days about how hot her feet would get sometimes but she wears flip flops. I know I know.. I have tried constantly to get her to wear something else but she won't. Pisses me off.
