Get a can of Pigspit. It is a little pricey 12-15 bucks per can but works miracles on black finishes. I have been through 2 cans on my 08 train. Makes the engine look brand new!

what he said . . . I have also used WD40, spray in on and hose it off. works if you don't run the motor and bake it on.
With a soft bristle (notice the word "soft") toothbrush and a little water to get the excess wax off, then dry off the engine with a little compressed air, that will get it off. Then a little S100 Engine Brightner that any Harley shop sells sprayed on the entire black of the engine. Let it dry and wipe off the excess and the engine will look like new.
