I am planning on going with the S&S 570C's , chain driven instead of gear. This decision is constrained by the $ than anything else. I plan on upgrading the chain tensioner to one of those auto ones with the spring underneath it though.
Questions:
1. Do I need to do the adjustable pushrods (is this a mandatory requirement or a nice to have)?
2. I have a Fuel Pak, is anyone using a Fuel Pak with other than stock cams? If so, any drawbacks?
3. Does anything need to be changed with the engine while doing the cams?
I plan on porting/polishing and milling the heads but will wait til winter along with possible upgrade to gear driven cams but for now, just want to get an upgrade in cams because I will be carrying a passenger more often than not.
Ive got the 570s in my 95" build. Gear driven and i think its an underrated cam! The 570s do have too much lift for your stock valve springs, maybe look at something more like the 510s or SE 204s U will need adjustables, unless youre plannin on taking the rocker boxes off! If you go that far you might as well send your heads out to get worked over while its apart anyways! Probably the easiest way is to cut your stockers and use adjustables. My question is why go chain driven just to go gear later down the road!!?? kind of a waste of time and money!! Not sure about the fuel pak, mines carbed. Nothing else besides pushrods is necessary, well maybe something to hold your lifters while you open the cam chest up! I really think if you backed off to something like the 510s, 37s, SE 204s and got a pc3 and a good tune youd be more than satisfied!!!
matt816 thanks for the gouge. I really appreciate the advice and hearing your input about the 570's. Local wrench swears by them....saw them install some with no adj rods just cams and thats it. I dont even think the cat had a tuner either. I will look further / look at those dynomometer sheets and try to figure something out.....this is not an easy subject or at least to me confusing with all the different types of cams.
