Man.....Don't be so hard on yourself. If you're like most of us you've made enough enemies along the way not to have to heap it on yourself like that.

No need to change forks, just the fender. It's just a matter of getting the spacers correct to center the wheel. I bought a spacer kit from Drag Specialites but had to make an extra 1/8 inch spacer to get the wheel centered properly. The only reason I made the spacer was because I had accsess to the equiptment at the time. I'm sure you can buy 1/8 inch spacers.
