Good Evening..I have a 93 Evo Softail. The top end was just redone about a thousand miles ago with a multi angle valve job, ported the heads, new rings and a Headquarters HQ-29 cam. First of all the bike runs like a bat out of hell and pulls extremely strong from idle to well I have not had the ***** to go past 5000 rpm with the screamin eagle ignition set-up.
Now here is my issue..When I start the bike (cold) I get a big puff of blue smoke for less than a second, nothing after that? It only seems to appear when the bike is cold and not after riding a short or long distance? No noticeable amount of oil consumption? By the way the issue has just started doing this about a week ago.
A puff of blue smoke is definitely oil related. Most likely your rings have'nt completely seated or oil is getting past you valve guides. Give it some more miles & keep an eye on your oil level. By the way, goose it good every now & then, if it's the rings, it will help seat 'em. By the way, I'm originally from Richwood, fellow West Virginian!

He pretty much summed it up. I wouldn't be overly concernd just yet, but keep an eye on it.
Your description is textbook perfect for this sort of failure.
When you shut the bike down when it's hot and then let it sit a long time (liker overnight) enough oil will seep down past the intake valve stem so that whe you first fire it up again a small amount of oil gets burned . . . ergo a puff of blue smoke. You're always burning a little but "little" is the operative word. It's only after hours of sitting that enough accumulates to give you a visable puff of blue smoke. So-o-o-o-o what to do? I'd say the folks who did your heads need to take a look at the guide seals they used and/or the valve stem to guide clearance. It's not something that will make your engine expire anytime soon . . . but niether should it be doing it.
