Default Clunky Transmission

The whole time I've owned my CrossBones, the shifting has been very clunky. Shifting seems to go more "ka-chunk" than "click". Basically, it's reminding me of the Buell I used to have. Both the Sporty and Fat-Bab I had before were VERY smooth, shifting-wise.

Basically, I want to know if this is normal, or if I need to investigate this further.

Thanks!

Oh yea, completely normal. You can hear my tranny from around the block when I shift on my fatty. My wife's dyna is much quieter, go figure.

Let's you know that you indeed have a Harley! Also, just put some of the thick pink stuff in when you change your tranny fluid and it will help. Can't think of the name at the moment. I don't use it, but know people that do.

I kind of like the way a Big Twin shifts and the "clunk" that it makes. There's no doubt that it's in gear. I've had many bikes (40 in my 42 yrs of riding) where I didn't know if the shift was made or whether I was going to find a false neutral. It was so bad on some bikes that I had to keep pressure against the shift pedal while letting the clutch out. In fact, I still shift like that out of habit.

I have a 2008 crossbones and it shifts like a hammer also. It was like that when new and the same after I switched to HD synthetic on the first fluid change.

There are a lot better fluids for the tranny than what comes in it from harley. Change it out to Mobil 1 gear lube, 75w/140. You will be amazed at the difference. There are others but I prefer the Mobil 1.

Redline Synthetic with Shock Proof is the oil mentioned above. I use it, and it does make a big difference. It makes shifting smoother and quieter, and also makes it easier to find neutral. I have noticed that if the clutch is adjusted a little on the tight side it makes the shifting a little "clunkier".

Thanks for the input, everyone! It is a relief to know that this is perfectly normal.

Now I guess I just need to decide whether to switch out for Redline or Mobil 1...

I use Bel Ray for the trans and no wine or clank and I can find neutral.

I take it there is no overall consensus on what is best to use for the transmission oil? The options seem endless!

Thanks for the input. I may just see what my H-D dealer has in stock...
