So I've had my bike a year now (2006 FLSTFI). Bought it used and was right at 5k miles so had the dealer do the 5k service so I was assured it checked out fine. Immediately bought the service and parts manuals afterwards. I'm now ready to tackle the 10k service myself. I had no problem changing the oil in all 3 holes, but am approaching this with a little more caution. Just wanted to see if anyone had any lessons learned that they thought should be passed on. I know the throttle needs adjusted for sure. I read there's a click when the front wire is good to go and it's full open on a carb, will the same click exist on an FI? Also, there's a lot of "inspect" in the manual, anything in particular I should be on the lookout for?

THanks for asking. I'm in the same boat. Has anyone looked at the videos which show you how to do your own service? Are they any good?

That makes 3 of us. I've just been procrastinating. Should have taken care of it this past winter or spring. The weather is finally decent up here so I don't want to be wrenching on my bike.
Nothing really mysterious about the 10k service. There are several videos online I found helpful in doing my own service. Mainly with the clutch adjustment. The service manual is great but sometimes a pic or vid is worth a thousand words.
Steering head adjustment and wheel spoke adjustments were the only two issues I had problems with. The fall away method for the steering head adjustment didn't work for me because the cables and wires bind and throw the test off. Didn't feel like disconnecting the cables so I skipped it.
Had the dealer do the adjustment when the bike was in for some warranty service. Charged me $75. Kind of doubt whether they did the fall away deal either. They probably adjust the bearings by feel or some secret torque value we're not privy to.
I'm in the process of putting new bars on the wife's bike so I'm going to take a stab at adjusting her steering head bearings while the cables are disconnected. And now that I see it's not that big of a deal to disconnect the cables I may try it on my own bike next time.
