Default Hole in primary.

Hit one of those orange reflectors this morning while making a turn. Didn't think too much of it until I got home and noticed an oil spot under it. Lifted it up on the jack and looked. Big hole half way between drain and primary cover. I hope I didn't hurt it riding on to work and back.Didn't notice anything wrong one the way home. Wheres the best place to get a new one? Does anybody make one that will take a little more abuse than OEM? If it isn't one thing, its another.

I don't think you hurt it. The oil level is at the bottom of the clutch pack inside the primary. There are primarys covers for softails everywhere from ebay to your local dealer. I doubt you can buy one that is any stronger then the next one. Would be a good time to put a chrome inner primary on. Just saying.

I would do the e-bay thing if you can find a deal... You gotta get the primary gasket and these 2 little washer like gaskets for the inside of the cover most people miss them if they are not careful. Your manual shows the order in which to remove and put back the bolts.

Another thing I did was tape a big plastic rubbish bag to the frame under the primary so that when the oil drips after you romove the outter cover the it doesn't get all over.

I am thinking about using JB Weld to build up the portions I have ground down on aggressive corners. I wish someone made one with a built in skid plate. I wonder how much more grinding I have left before my cover sprouts a leak.

I did the exact same thing. It took me 4 tries to get it to seal up. I finally got it to stop leaking by removing it and sanding the silver paint of of the inside (wich is the key). JB weld is too stiff with all the heating and cooling the primary goes through. I went to napa and got some 35 minute two part seringe epoxy on the inside and jb weld on the outside to give it some beef incase I grind the case agian. The whole reason my primary was draging was because I needed to adjust my rear shocks up. No more dragin my primary.

I can get you a new outer primary cover for about $200. I am unclear on if you need the inner as well. Let me know and we can talk.

Take it to a good welding shop and have it patched. If you couldn't see the hole, then no one will see the patch.
