Looking at paint sets for sale I've noticed 97-99 parts are the years that fit. What is the difference that the 90-96 parts (tank/fenders) don't fit the 97-99 years?
A cut out for the fuse box in the rear fender on '97 and later. Different bung holes in the gas tanks which I believe are ok if you just swap to the correct caps. And I believe '96 or '97 - not sure which - and later changed to an electronic speedo so the newer front fender wouldn't have the cut out for the speedo cable where the older would.
There are some differences and it would probably be easiest to just stay within the years that will work on your bike without having to make any changes. These are off the top of my head and I may be wrong on one but I know there are a few differences.
