Am I way off on this negotiation? I want to offer the Harley dealer my softail deuce and $6K for a 2010 deluxe (sunglo)

Trade in value of my bike is listed as $9065 stock on KBB. It has new rims, tires, pipes, all matching grips and pegs and was fully serviced in march at the dealer.

So I'm hoping $10K for trade and another $6K for the bike. It's about 10% of msrp. Am I stretching too far here?

I thought MSRP on a deluxe was close to 20K?

Too bad you are so far away. Just traded my 05 Deuce in Saturday. Dealer gave me $11,500 before I told him what I wanted to trade for.

I'd say let them tell you what they are going to five for the trade and work from there. That way if it comes back higher than you want it will work in your favor.

I agree with above, let the dealer make the first move, that way you know where to start.

That said, I think you can do far better than what you're thinking of doing. My father-in-law got a brand new Heritage for 12K.

I'm the Queen in Negotiating, or at least that's what my friends say, some say I can be darn right embarassing to be around when I'm negotiating. I've had my last dealer chasing me down the parking lot accepting my final offer as I attempted to drive away. Yes, I finally got the car for what I wanted to pay for it.

Always start off by researching the price with other dealers and on the internet for the same product (for both the new bike and what the trade is worth) before you start. Then you need to establish just how much you are willing to pay for the item and you are willing to walk away for. Once you have this in your pocket your ready to start negotiating. In your first discussion you can tell them what you have found elsewhere but tell them that you would prefer to deal local or what ever it is that's drawing you to them. It's good to negotiate with more than one seller at the same time but let them know that your doing that. You don't have to disclose everything you know but you do need to be honest. Always start off by asking the dealer for his best possible offer, with or without the trade / financing etc. Then you counter offer with an offer that is "lower" than than what you think the dealer is going to sell the item for. You continue this process until you either get your price or you walk away. It's a pretty simply win/win process. If the dealer come close but is not willing to budge any further and you still really want the bike then you can start negotiating in options etc if that's what you want.

It works great for me, hope it does for you too.

Don't forget to check NADA values, as they are WAY lower than KBB. HD financing uses NADA...at least they did on my bike last friday. Good luck, and all they can say is no...then tell them that you can do better at another dealership...they need to eat so you might be surprised what they'll do for you. St Joe HD in MO did a KILLER deal for me on my interest rate. a FULL point and a half LOWER than what Oklahoma wanted to give me. Glad I drove up there! Good Luck!
