Why do we put 75-140 weight oil in our trannys when the MoCo recommends 20-50?.

Seems if a tranny was built in such a manner that a thinner oil provided better lubrication it would only follow that a heavier oil could be too thick to get into certain areas and wouldn't drain the metal wear particles as well.

I think I'll dump the heavy stuff in our bikes and go back to a stock weight oil.

I think most switch to the heavy stuff because it tends to quiet them down a bit. Maybe at a sacrifice.

This seems to make sense.

Viscosity for gear oil is measured differently than engine oil. I think 20-50 engine oil and 75-140 gear oil are pretty close. The Service Manual for my '07 Bagger specifies use only Formula + in the transmission. No mention of 20-50 engine oil. High quality oils are available to meet the specific needs of engines and trannies these days. I prefer to take advantage of that and not use the one size fits all marketing of Harley's Syn 3.

Gear whine in a tranny is not a defect. I remember the school bus whining through the gears when I was a kid. The old 4 speeds in muscle cars whined, it's normal. If people are putting heavier oil in their trannies to reduce the whine they could be creating a real problem where none existed. When gears wear they howl, thats a problem that has been masked by using heavier lubes, even saw dust, for years.

Had to delete my previous post, as I just did some research and saw that this stuff is the Heavy Shockproof stuff repackaged.

I've been running this for a while now.

I think I may change if this is 75w/250...boy it gonna be a biiiaatch flushing out this stuff.

I've used Mobil 1 75W140 for a couple of years now, and on every oil change, I've never seen any metal shavings on the drain plug.
