Howdy. Only been riding my 98 Fatboy for about 2 months now. Haven't drove my car since tho... (about 5000 miles- muhuhahaa!)
Anyways, when I accidently hit a pot hole or similar my *** end makes a jarring BANG. I reckon this is normal(?). I just worry- am I damaging the rim each time that happens? I don't care about me or my passenger as far as that goes. Part of the experience... but whats actually making that hard contact?
Excellent advice already given...check tires, wheels, shock bolts, ETC . The bang you hear and feel is more than likely the suspension bottoming out on the stops. Can be a big jolt at times. That's the price paid for lowering the rear. I catch it sometimes too. if it's a problem...raise it a tad!!
i have a 2010 fatboy and when i ride 2 up , i bottom out sometimes(suspension hits the stops, not frame hitting the pavement)
i'm 275, my lady about 200. i read that the shocks come on the lightest setting from the factory. i bought the spanner to adjust it, only $10 bux from HD, but havent had a chance to adjust it. when i brought the bike in for 1000 mile service, i asked them to adjust it a little firmer. service mgr told me not too because riding solo the rear end would "bounce off the road" if i hit a bump. he claims that something as small as an expansion joint in the road would make that happen.
