High pitch whine

High pitch whine
I have read the other post about high pitch whines, but mine is different. I was on a run Sat, and I stopped on the second stop after a 20 min ride. The motor was making a loud high pitch whine, and being a newbie, I just passed it off as being hot. After a quick burger, I went to crank it again. No more whine. Click, click, click. Couldn't jump start it or push start it. Recharged the battery, still no go. Any suggestions?

I charged my battery again yesterday, and it died almost instantly. I am going to get a new one today. I was told by an old guy that if the battery is "too dead" it wont jump or push start. But, I still don't know what the high pitched whine is/was.
To 4 inch: It might have been the whole time I was riding, but not after I stopped and shut it down. A few days before, the starter began to clunk and grind a little before it would turn over.
To the Dr.: No. Where are they located. It's my first Harley. 89 Softail Custom

Sounds like Battery is DOA. Put a new Battery in then cross your fingers that your starter engages properly. If it doesn't then your starter was doing the whining and indicates it was most likely hung.
