what pleasant thoughts...helmets save lives...as long as you have medical insurance, no one cares if you wear a helmet. just don't expect the taxpayers to be happy about supporting an invalid for years because he was too stupid to wear a helmet.

I've heard that 'argument' for years. Tell me this Einstein.
How many 'STUPID BIKERS' are on life support?
vs. welfare ****** and illegals getting gubmit benefits??
I wore a helmet before it became mandatory to wear one. It was my choice then. I also wear eye protection and hearing protection when using power tools at home. That still is my choice.
I'm a member of AMA and ABATE trying to help keep our freedoms personal choices.
I don't wear a helmet, and I'm a fan of letting those who ride choose. HOWEVER, if I somehow knew I was about to crash and was given a choice,....... I'll take a helmet please
Back in early '02 (I think) I was paralyzed from the neck down in an ATV accident. Docs said a helmet would not have helped me, my chin folded down into my sternum, near bouts, and screwed up my neck. Several surgeries, bolts and steel plates later, I can function, though I am in severe pain CONSTANTLY unless I take some good narcotics. Which I am fortunate to get from a pain clinic, finally.
That said, I do and have always worn a helmet when on the asphalt and a MC. Even if it wasn't the law, I would wear one, unless it was a neighborhood trip. Yea, I know, most accidents happen close to home, blah, blah.
Glad your friend made it out OK. Hope he gets the bike fixed ASAP and is back in the saddle.
I want to add a few things to this.
FIRST, I hope your friend is doing OK and all is well and he is extremely lucky.
Second, I am not bringing this up to start opinions and do NOT want to get into a huge debate but helmets do and do not save lives. Your friend is extreamley luckey having flown 100 feet threw the air but a majority of the time the cause of death in a bike accident is blunt force trauma to the chest and so on. nine times out of ten there is a rupture of the aorta due to the blunt force trauma.
There are three accidents to every accident if you will.
An example would be:
First. a car hits a wall at 50mph
Second is the person hits the dash, steering wheel, seat belt at 50 mph.
Third is the organs also hit the inside of the chest cavity at 50mph and that is where the problem is.
I have worked as a Chief Deputy Coroner for 11 years and have been to ( sadly) around 30 or so motorcycle fatality over the years. At that time in the state where I worked helmet laws were still in effect untill my last year working in that position but in my unofficial opinion and from what I have seen ( also working in a level 1 trauma center at the time and getting every motorcycle MVA for 200 miles) helmets really do not help much in a motorcycle accident. I am not saying to use or not to use a helmet and never would but just wanted to add some personal experience with you. This is one reason you are seeing helmet laws dissipating slowly in states.
Again, I hope your friend is up and back in the saddle again soon and I am glad is is doing well. I do agree that in THIS situation ( from what was posted) the helmet helped protect him from a possible bad outcome or facial fractures and so on.
Just my little 2 cents.
Ride safe!
Thanks for the interesting information. My wife and I were in an accident in May of this year while at bike week in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Neither of us were wearing a helmet and given the circustances it made no difference. I had a pretty bad hematoma on my right inner thigh that felt like an over ripe tomato for about three months and an upcoming left knee surgery. My wife is still having back & neck problems and alot of emotional trauma. My state has a helmet law so I wear one. When given the chance in other states, sometimes I do-sometimes I don't...it all depends. That being said I do think it should be my choice.
Tell your buddy to twist the throttle the next time he goes into a wobble. It unloads the front end and will stop the shaking most of the time. Then he won't need to use the helmet.
