Default Back to stock exhaust.....UPDATE

When I bought my 01 Night Train it the PO had installed V&H Big Radius pipes on it. I like the look but just too loud for me I think. I picked up a stock exhaust just because I like to have the parts come resell time if I should decide to go that route someday. I have a feeling that the BR pipes are going to be really loud for a passenger so have been mulling over the idea of installing the stock pipes.

Current set up with the V&H is Screaming Eagle breather, dynojet kit, and the V&H pipes. If i were to slap on the stock pipes what can I expect besides a difference in noise level? More torque? Will I need to rejet since it is running the screaming eagle breather? What about fuel mileage? Just want to know what I'm getting into if I were to make the change. I would like to maybe go to a Supertrapp 2-1 exhaust maybe next Spring.

TIA!

Mark

I had SE II's on my heritage with the SE Stage 1 Breather. It was just too load for both me and the people where I live. I was getting ready to look for an alternative slip-on muffler with better sound, but not so sharp and rappy. My local HD service manager suggested I forget the new pipe or muffler unless I just had the cash to burn. I had the stock pipes also. They had this huge drill bit. For $35 they drilled out the plug in the stock muffler. It sounds great and doesn't seem to have changed how the engine runs at all.

I like the stock look of my Heritage exhaust, So I ordered & installed a set of American Custom mufflers, and was pleased with the way they sound. I got the "mid rumble" and it's just that. The old girl just has a little deeper voice now, nothing offensive or out of character for me. If I want noise, I can take the baffels out in about 3 minutes & have noise. They're genuine HD mufflers, modified to use different baffles, or none at all.

Splais1, your Heritage is fuel injected isn't it? If so I'm guessing that might make a difference in that it didn't make much difference in the way it ran. Maybe it adapted for the exhaust change. Don't know that for a fact though. With mine being carbed I'm wondering if I'd need to lean it out a bit to keep it from running too rich with the factory exhaust back on there or would the breather kit keep it in an acceptable range. I think it runs a little on the rich side as it is. I have read that about the dynojet kits being on the rich side anyway.

Thanks for the post!

The previous owner of my 03 Heritage had installed the stage-1 air filter with the old style un-muffled SEII slip on pipes. He had the chip flashed with to enrich the mixture for stage-1. I put the stock pipes back on and left the intake and programming alone, it runs great. Better than it ran with the SEII's. No deceleration popping and back firing. If you've got the time and money you might want to consider the American Custom mufflers, they sound great and give you lots of options.

I bought an 01 EFI Fatboy that had the gutted stock pipes with stage 1 and dealer download...I put V&H BS Longs on it with no baffles and it runs like a champ.

V&H doesn't make the quiet baffles for the Big Radius pipes. At least that was the case last time I checked. From what I've read hear, the Big City Thunder don't make that much difference in volume but more in tone. I would need to hear them in person to know for sure if it would be enough I guess.

yeah, but if you make the tone more "Bassish" it will reduce that snarl of the BR pipes.
