You can show them receipts but they still might give you a hard time, espescially not using H-D's oil
Unless they (H-D Service Departments) provide the service (Maintenance) for free, which they do not, isn't this is against the law.
I know we are in the Softail Forum, but is it really that much different than the Dyna 1000 mile? 1000 mile service for the Dyna Model.

Nothing extensive there, and that is the entire 1000 mile service list for the Dyna. I know we are in the Softy Forum. Are they that much different?
The 20,000 mile adds change spark plugs, and check motor mounts for the Dyna. That is all that is different.

If you miss something or neglect something such as a loose fastner or proper torque.. esp in the so-called fall-away test. and if you encounter the death wobble, tank slap etc. Only you yourself can be responsible on insurance claims... Heaven forbid!
Every time I've had a bike in the dealer for service or accident work it's come back with loose or missing fasteners so I figure if I have to check and redo their work for them I may as well do the whole job myself.
I enjoy the satisfaction of doing my own work but aside from that I can't see paying someone else $75-$85 an hr to do something I can do myself. I'd rather keep those $ for the times there's something I can't do.
I went the safe route for my 1000 mile service and used all HD fluids and filter. But as long as you use comparable products and keep your receipts and record of service there's no way they can deny your warranty.
I was going to have the dealer do the 1000mi service but when I spoke to them they told me to do it myself and save the coin (really). They told me it can't affect the warranty by doing it myself. I used the HD synthetic and added Lucas synthetic made for the HD motor per the Lucas specs. The motor is quiet and looking at the oil with 3k on it it still looks great. All three holes with filter was around $80.00 or so. I did go over the whole bike top to bottom and checked everything. Only thing I found was the front break line holder under the fork was almost out.
Do it yourself. My dealer told me most people take it to them for the first service but if you want to do it yourself and save some money, just save your receipts and it won't affect your warrenty.
i would go with moco for the 1 k and then you should be covered for any loose bolts or defects found and you have moco records. I know it cost more and that is why on my second bike i had the dealer throw it in free.

I also let the stealership do my 1k service, shortly after I found a few loose bolts and fastners that I had to tighten myself. No pride in their work at least at my local stealership. If this was to happen on my truck it would't be such a problem but I only have two wheels on my bike....
I am watching my 5 month old son, and my 6 year old daughter. Put the son in the saucer thingy that has stations on it, let the 6 year old play with the boxer in the yard. Verified every bolt on my Harley I could without putting it on the jack, whipped it down, checked fluids, air cleaner, and tire pressure. Took me about 45 minutes to an hour, and that was taking time to play with the kids.
I didn't change fluids and all, but really is it that hard to torque a bolt, and check the brake pad spacing visually? Really? Again I have a Dyna, and we are speaking Softail. Come to think of it. I guess that is some of the awesomeness of the Dyna. Everything is opened up for you, and you can just get it done without having to remove bags, fairings, and windshields. All the mess that would make a job that takes 2 hours when changing fluids into a 6 hour hassle.
I make this a ritual. After a while you pretty much know what bolt is going to need a little bump. It seems that they are always the same ones. Whatever you choose, there isn't a right or wrong. It is your dough. For me though, $275 is about 22 tanks of gas in the Harley. That is enough to get me to work and back for a while. Or it is 1/2 months daycare. Could be 4 hot dogs, 4 cokes, a Mickey Mouse hat, and a Tinker Bell poster for my 6 year old in a month or so. So it is all up to you.
Not better way to know your bike then to do all the work on it. Get a manual and do the work yourself.
If you dont take pride in your bike I guarantee the dealer wont. Do it yourself.
For all those who say they wont honor the warranty if they dont do the work; thats complete BS. They dont have to honor the warranty ONLY if they can prove the bike lacks the required service. However, they cant dictate who does the service.
