Default Green Lady Down

Well, it happened. I came out of work last night to find out my bike (06 Deuce) had fallen over. Some kind fellow biker had put it back up on the jiffy stand and left me a note. Not a lot of damage, but some (mostly the primary cover, and I lost a bit of the primary chaincase lube, which I topped off at home later).

Get this - it fell over on its LEFT side. It's as though the jiffy stand had failed or slipped.

Anybody ever run into this???

It's possible your kick stand wasn't all the way forward when you left it. Ya gotta make sure you push your kick stand all the way forward where it kinda locks in place once weight is put on it. Sorry to hear about your bike, it's amazing what damage a tip over can cause. Hope it doesn't cost to much to get back in shape.

Nice to hear someone put it back up and left you a note. Still lots of good folks out there running around.

That sucks, hope the bike gets well soon. Jiffy stand makes me nervous as it always moves as I dismount. Knowing it will move ahead of time never seems to make me feel better. I remember when I got my train from the stealer they put it out the front door front and center on the hot asphalt. I went outside after signing my life away and saw it sinking in and just about threw up a little in my mouth.

Sorry to hear about your Deuce going down.... I always find myself double checking to make sure the kickstand is all the way foward (locked)....I'd hate to have it go down.....[]

Oh that could have been a bad bad day. I hope you caught it in time.

Hot asphalt is bad news all around..
It's definitely worth the 5$ for one of those "hockey pucks" you put under your kickstand in the summer.
I've even used an old ballcap before, when there was nothing else available. Just anything to make that footprint bigger so it doesn't start digging in.

I've also seen older bikes where the 'jiffy' stand actually BROKE.. Saw a guy cussing because his pristine vintage 1990 fatboy (THE original, with completely spotless perfect paint) decided to brake and fall down like a horse having a stroke.. He was about to cry like a baby.. When we walked around to see the damage when he pulled in.. We all hung our heads and took our hats off.. It was a sad somber moment. [&o]

How did the primary fluid leak out, is there a hole in the case?

happens all the time on hot sunny days when parked on asphalt. That's why you need some kind of a "jiffy cookie" to distribute the weight. Most bike friendly places have a concrete slab for parking bikes. Crete don't melt. Always carry a cookie in the saddle bag for parking on surfaces other than concrete, i.e. asphalt, grass, gravel, dirt, sand. You get the drift.

Thanks folks.

I honestly don't think this was the result of the jiffy stand not being set up right when I walked away, nor of it sinking into hot asphalt (it was cool here in Boston yesterday). But I guess I'll never know.

Not sure why some of the primary lube leaked, maybe the derby cover wasn't snugged up enough. Gasket looked fine, and I torqued down those little screws with a touch of loctite so it's on there now for sure.

Had Redline MTL in the primary - looked like blood on the ground and the case.....

Someone on another forum just pointed out that I was probably leaking transmission fluid (apparently the tranny has a vent tube to the left side of the bike), not primary fluid. And that makes sense - the fluid in the primary was already brown (after 400 miles!), whereas what was spilled was still bright red - probably my Redline Shockproof Heavy, still looking like a strawberry daiquiri!

Just passing that on in case - god forbid - anybody else runs into the same problem.

It's possible that someone knocked it over, but like you said, you'll probably never know. Take a good close look at the high side and see if there are any scratches or paint from another vehicle.
Sorry it happened.
