Default Crossbones Springer Maintenance

Just bought a 09 Crossbones 6th bike first Harley. Was wondering if anyone can tell me what maintenance is like. I bringing it to the dealers tomorrow for them to put on some V&H side shots as well as do the 500 mile service. They want me to bring in again at 1000 miles. Is this just for an oil change I plan to do all that my self?

Second I've heard stories about the front end needing a rebuild every 10000 miles costing 1200 dollars and that every time I bring it in I need to have the front end serviced. I've also heard people say they have 50000 miles on their springer with no extra maintenance. They were sold out of owners manuals and told me that they would get me one when they restock, seem like they should have a manual for every new bike sold.

Anyway can you guys enlighten me?

At 500 miles they check the rockers on the springer.

At 1000 miles they change oil and check the torque etc on a lot of the nuts and bolts. it's the final check-up of the bike. Personally I would let the dealer do that one.

The springer front end needs checked for torque every 2500 miles ... you can do this yourself if you want. Same goes for the steering neck bearings. They need checking and grease every 2500 miles too. I checked mine at 2500 and 5000 and they were still in well in spec.

There is no need to rebuild the springer front at all unless you really let it go to pot.

$1200? I think new rockers and new rocker bearings would never cost that much. I've seen them on ebay for a fraction of that.

To do the adjusting of the rocker bearings and the steering neck bearings you need a special tool. Some dealers say they can't sell you that tool because of liability etc. but you can find those tools online if you do a little search.

About owner manuals ... you talking about the service manual or the owners manual? Owners manual only has maintenance schedule in it.

The grease is simple, there is a grease nipple on the right side of your steering head. Just pump it full with the right grease with a regular grease gun until it comes out of the bearings. The first time you really have to fill the whole head, when they assemble the bike they only put grease on the bearings themselves.

You can find whole threads discussing which grease is the best ...

As for the tools:

You might find them a bit cheaper at other sites.

I would wait until you get your service manual before you attempt futzing around with the springer front end!

I take mine in every 5000 thats it. 17,000 miles and no problems. Never heard of rebuilding front end every 10,000, I think someone was pulling your leg.
