Default XB servicing...

...a little bit more involved than other rides, the whole "Springer" thing and all that. I like doing my own servicing after the initial 1000 mile check-up. With that in mind, I have been prepping for the next service interval by utilizing the HD service manual. The XB is my first Springer so it came as a mild surprise that the Springer front end requires a more frequent service schedule than my Night Train. Specifically, the steering head bearings must be adjusted and lubricated every 2500 miles. Additionally, the springer rocker bearings must be adjusted every other service and involves some interesting manipulation.

As it turns out, you need a special tool that HD doesn't sell to the public to adjust the steering head bearings. I found this out today when I went to the dealership with HD part# for the tool, per the service manual, and then was told that I could not order the tool and I would have to manufacture my own. Sounded kind of funny and smelled a bit weird, so I googled "Springer steering head bearing tool." The following link came up:

Well looky there, that is the tool you need unless you want to take the front end of the bike apart! And wouldn't you know it, they also have a rocker arm adjustment tool that makes the rocker bearing inspection a "civilized" exercize. I ordered both tools.

So all you CrossBones owners out there that may be scratching your head and wondering if servicing the thing is for you, take a good look at these 2 tools. The rest of the servicing is standard stuff. I just cannot see taking the bike in every 2500 miles. The service manual is very comprehensive and I think just about anyone could handle it.

The wife just told me that I had a message from the parts counter at the dealership. Apparently it was to pass along that they knew a place to get the tools I was asking about and that they would order them if I wanted. It is probably from the same site I found earlier if I were to guess. I need to swing by and get the recall work done, I'll get the lowdown and pass along what I find.

There is also a Springer Front End Maintenance training video that shows step by step on how to adjust the rocker bearing and head bearings. Anyone interested, shoot me an email at tnharley@comcast.net
