drop some on your paint and see what happens. Dot 5 won't harm it, but Dot 4 will eat it up.

Don't know about the different colors,but I screwed up and accidently added dot 4 to dot 5 and it did cause problems

What did it do ?

I assume since the cover says dot 5 that it has dot 5 in it . Just brown gold color and the new stuff is purple . I filled it up we will see ..

If it says Dot 5, use that and change the fluid completly. It sounds like the fluid in there needs to be changed anyway.

Mixing the two can cause the fluid to coagulate and turn to jelly. That in turn can cause brake failure. NEVER mix DOT 5 and DOT 4

Or dip your finger in it and dab some on the tip of your tongue. If it makes your tongue tingle a bit, it's DOT 4......No, I am not kidding...LOL.

In my screw up it caused the brakes to hang up.Once applied it would take a few seconds for the rear brake to let go.It caused a black streaking
effect of the fluid when looking into the master cylinder.Once it was all cleaned out,bled and new Dot 5 replaced the problem was solved.
DO NOT mix them.

If you had to add much fluid ...You might want to look at your brake pads...Low fluid level usually indicates pad wear.
