Also, this works for me, try holding clutch lever 5-6 sec. before hitting shifter. Gives clutch time to work...

Adjust the clutch on the cable and that should cure your issue. I am yet to try the ATF in the primary but I think i will next time I change the oil.

Default Manual

Read yer manual. I went through mine and for a 98 flstf your not supposed to go from second to neutral. Might be the same for most bikes. HD recomends always going from first to neutral. The guy I bought my bike form had the same problem. Said it was very hard to hit neutral from second. He never read the manual.

i feel your pain:

I had a Street Bob that I traded in for my current Fat Boy Lo, only time I can get it to click into Neutral is in the garage, banking as I start, or when leaving a light in heavy traffic

As stated before, check your clutch free play. You might need to tighten it up a bit. AND, switch to and non-foaming ATF in the primary. The only caveat to ATF is its a little noisier when it gets hot when compared to conventional or synthetic oils (but your clutch sure works a hell of a lot better!).

1.You should have changed your oil at 1000 miles as per the owners manual. So the factory oil should be gone.
2. You should also have adjusted your clutch cable at the 1000 mile mark too.
3. Best suggestion would be to get a service manual and get your bike running like a champ.

Adjust the clutch;it takes almost no time at all. It was a pain to find N when my Ultra was new but once the clutch was adjusted at the 1K no issues since then.

Always thought this was a tranny issue rather than a clutch one. My bike had finding neutral issues when brand new. Some suggested it was a breakin issue that would go away by itself after a few k was put on the bike. Others suggested changing to a heavier tranny oil. I took the latter suggestion and the finding neutral issue went away immediately. Not sure what causes it for sure. Just saying what seemed to work for me.
