So you can take the spedo apart. thats awesome i want to change my odometer lcd. i would love to know the secrets of getting the spedo apart.
Oh, it will come apart. And NO, it's not designed to come apart. No sercret, there is a stainless housing that meets a plastic housing and the two are joined with a roll bead. Just work the bead with a small screwdriver, round and round, little by little.
Spyder, you are the reason this is all happening as we saw your thread on changing the light colors. Thank you! You might be able to etch the black off. Check out these gauge faces. http://www.socalitems.com/

I'm so humbled! Thanks for the kudos.
Those faces look pretty cool. I haven't decided what sort of creation I'm gonna go with. after seeing the stainless steel ones, I wish there was a way to scrape out the black of the original face into a flame pattern like on the gauge on the website, without losing the outline of the numbers from the gauge.
Makes me almost wish I had two-tone colors in mind. Like scrape out a flame pattern on the face, then paint it with blue clear paint. With red lights it would show through purple, and I'd still have the red numbers on the speedo. So many options!!!
