Wide Glide or Softail Custom?
Hi,
I have a 2004 Sportster 1200 Custom with Screamin' Eagle pipes. I am tired of the vibration and want a bigger bike and a smoorther ride. The Wide Glide fits me really nice, especially with the very forward controls. I am also considering a Softail Custom, which definitely vibrates less than the Wide Glide. I do like the look and fit of the Wide Glide better. Has anyone gone from a 2004 or later Sportster to a Wide Glide and if so, how is the vibration on a long trip? Any suggestions about my decision?
Thanks!
Mike

My friend just went from an '04 1200 sportster to an '06 super glide custom, he said it's a HUGE difference in ride compared to the sportster.
I just bought an '06 softail deuce, I'll let you know how that rides when I pick it up on Friday!

i went from a 2005 1200r to an 07 softail standard. difference is night and day. love the softail. either, the wg or fxstc will be a much better ride than the sporty, go with whichever you like better, you won't regret either once you are on it.
I would say that if you like the look and fit of the Wide Glide better, then that is it. They are both nice bikes and either would be a smoother ride than your sportster.
JMHO...
I don't particularly care for the rear fender/tire look of the WG.
It just doesn't fit together.
I like the flowing lines of a Softail myself.
Buy the FXSTC, toss out that rear seat and sissy into a near by dumpster, and get a set of internally wired fat apes, and I think you'll have the best of both worlds.

I like the soft tail better, but it's up to you. You should go to your dealer and ride both to see what fits you best. I would think comfort would be the number one prioity.

Ok...sombody please correct me if i am wrong (and tell me why). How can you say a wide glide vibates more than the softail. a softail frame has a rigid mounted motor while the wide glide dyna frame is rubber mounted so the shake will be contained within the frame. i know the new softail motors are counterbalanced but still. [just playing devils advocate].

You just answered your own question - the Balanced motor is very smooth at idle - either are fine at speed.
Unless you like (or dislike) the rockin' roll of the motor while sitting at a light, either is going to suit you... as said before, go to the dealer and ride them both... hell do a rental of each and roll a couple hundred miles per ride... remember, once you own it you ain't gonna be "test ridin" - anything will be okay for 5 or 10 miles... making a big investment may require a couple days rental fees, and hell a good dealer may even give you all or part of the rental fees back in upgrades once you buy your new sled from them.
