Default Simple axle covers

I've allready done some bigger mods this off season, so I figured I would do some simple chrome pieces while I wait for the roads to clear.
One of those pieces are chrome rear axle covers, no big deal right? Well I get the left side on no problem and go to the right side, but it won't sit flat to the swing arm. So I look at them a little closer and see that the left one is a little deeper then the right one. So to make a borring story short should my nut and pin on the axle that sticks out more, normally be on the left side?
I put a new tire on in the fall and didn't think it mattered what side the nut was on.
But maybe it does for the chrome covers?

From factory they come with the nut on the left side ... Axle comes out on the right side.
