I just did this last night. I wrapped mine in a towel at the spot that the lower triple tree clamps down. Put it in a vice and tighten down gently. Then the actual cap comes out pretty easy. Mine was not torque too much. Careful, that cap is under spring pressure. Not too bad, just be aware.

I have to know if you do this do you still have to remove the lowers to get the springs in? I am under the impression you do on an FL softail.

Drew, I did not have to remove the lowers. Pulled the fork tube out of the triple tree, popped off the cap, cut PVC spacers to 3", dropped in new springs with spacer. Added new fork oil and put the cap back on. Put it back on the bike and repeat. Dropped it 2". If its too much ill go in and add a longer spacer.

Patharley, Its best to loosen the top caps before loosening the bottom tripple clamp bolts. I used a progressive kit from L.A. choppers. Im not sure if all lowering kits are the same. On the fl model you will have to remove the forks to get the damper rod out. There is a bolt at the bottom of the fork that you will need to remove in order to get the damper rod out. Turn fork upside down to get the damper rod out. Dump oil first of coarse. on this kit there is another spring to put with the stock spring below the damper rod. then reinstall the damper rod and bottom bolt with new brass washers. Install heavy H.D. fork oil. I used 12 oz. on each fork. Then drop in the upper spring, washer, pvc spacer cut to 2.5",washer, fork cap reinstall fork and then top cap. Like I said, not sure if all kits are the same. About 2.5 hours to do this complete. 2" drop.

When you pulled off the cap, Was there not stuff in the way? Every time I pop mind off I am faced with a bunch of stuff that is in the way, but if I can just drop some in I will do it.

t stone, you must have a different kit than me. I had the drop-in. Didn't require disassembly of the lowers.

I had to move the handlebars out of the way in order to get the caps off. Then loosened the pinch bolts and slid the fork tube out. I removed wheel, fender, etc. When I opened the fork tube, there was one big spring, which the kit replaces with two springs and a PVC spacer and two brass washers.

But you opened the tube on the top or the bottom to put the spring in? Did the spring drop in from the top?
