Default Deluxe Question

I have an opportunity to trade my old 93 FXLR for a 2011 Deluxe. My question is will the Deluxe be a bike I can ride long distance on. I used to ride the FXLR to Sturgis but that was when it was still new. I've had to put some work into the old bike and don't want to spend more money on it. Since my riding years are quickly coming to an end due to my age, I still want to travel to places across the USA. Riding over 600 miles a day used to be easy, now I don't know for sure if the softail will take me in reasonable comfort with it packed down for a long trip.

Sure; the Softail will do it but a touring bike would make it easier. I spent a few hundred mile on a Heritage a few months ago and I was really happy to get back home on my Ultra. Huge difference in ride quality over a long distance.

If you are 5' 10" or over I would strongly suggest the Heritage over the Deluxe. Your legs will feel cramped on the Deluxe. Also, for a couple hundred $ you get windshield and bags with the Heritage. Better deal.

That said, the touring bikes will still be better comfort wise.

Default Deluxe

Thanks guys, I fully understand that the Heritage is more bike for the buck with the windshield and bags. I'm like so many, like the Deluxe style better. Yes, my ego wants that touring bike. I had a SG last year that just set in the garage. I could never get it low enough to ride. Plus I just didn't like the color Black Pearl. I had to sell it due to needing a newer vehicle instead. But now that I'm retired, my finances can handle a new bike. I am short and would need to lower any dresser for my height front and rear, plus redo a seat also. My concern is that the Deluxe is less money than the Classic or SG, but will it give me the ride I'm looking for in a new bike. My old FXLR rode great in the beginning but now, it is hard on me to ride. Old bikes ride like old bikes.

Another dealer knows that my ego is getting the best of me and we are talking about a Classic that I can strip down.

Skip the Touring bikes if you are small...I'm small and have had a few RoadKings and a SG...the softail is more comfortable for me.

The Deluxe is a good fit...and with a few goodies (windshield/bags/engine guard/drivers backrest...)could be a fine long ride bike IMO...

The FBlo is also a sweet riding bike...same goodies, and I'd do a 500mi day on my Lo with Cadillac comfort...& stylin' while doin' it...(although regular long rides may require a handlebar change...or a Road King )

Sounds like you really like the Luxe tho...

[no attempt to put down HD touring bikes...they are awesome...and who knows, I may roll one again someday]

Default Lux

I know that a windshield is a must on the Luxe. The HD saddlebags turn me off due to there is no room in them. I really like th Hog Deluxe bags and would love to have the springer bags but that would mean changing the pipes. Oh, gotta have some tunes and would add a satellite set up to the handlebars.

Speaking of bags, I looked at a 05 Deluxe that had some sort of an older bag that had the basket weave on the front, not the same but very similar. These bags were larger than the locking bag. I can't find them anywhere.

I'm only 5'4" and my wife is about a 1 1/2" taller. Our Deluxe is very comfortable for us so far. We've done rides as long as 500 miles in a day. I would recommend the Hog Deluxe bags over the HD OEM bags though. They're tiny. Get bigger bags from Hog Deluxe and you'll be much happier. We also put a bag on the sissy bar for trips and it can be as big as you want. Windshield is a must for longer trips. Otherwise, I personally agree with you and don't like the baggers either. You can get the SG down to a comfortable height if you really want one...but they are nowhere near as fun to ride as an everyday bike as the Softails.

I have an 07 Deluxe, and after installing a Mustang seat with backrest, I can ride for hours with no problems.

I just got the HogDeluxe Springer bags, and so far I'm pretty pleased. I was able to fit my laptop in them. No way thats gonna happen with the OEM Deluxe bags
