you have to remove the tank and after that not real hard. you will need new gaskets and change the breathers while you are there

Get the service manual. The process is easy, IF you remove and install the assorted bolts in the proper order.

The top part is reasonably easy, just tight working space, the bottom part gets a bit more complicated.
Get a service manual, it explains it in detail and gives you a very good idea if it is something you would be comfortable doing.

It's explaining how to rotate the engine to reduce the pressure on the pushrods for an individual cyclinder. If you don't understand that, I would seriously recommend an experienced helper when you take it apart.

I don't know what year bike you have but on an evo you have to remove the tanks, jack up the rear tire put it a high gear, and take off the top 2 parts of the rocker boxes (You will then be able to see the rockers). Then rotate the tire until the 2 rockers on one jug are even and you can rotate the push rods (the valves are closed). Then remove the bottom part of the rocker box. The push rods are marked for each valve (color coded). When you put it back together make sure when your new gaskets allow for oil passage as some do not and will cause popping ( engine noise ), poor acceleration, and oil leaks. Also make sure when you bolt the boxes back on you let the lifters bleed out or the torque will be wrong on the bolts. I might have made this sound like a bitch, but if you take your time and are good with a wrench you can do it. Best off luck and have fun!!
