Default Bang when starting.

I just picked up a 2009 FLSTC with 2100 miles on it. Well of course I didnt notice when I was buying it, but now there is a big BANG right before the bike starts.

It will turn over normally but just before it starts it has a very hard mechanical bang and then the bike runs normally.

Any have any idea on what this is?

Thanks

If it is a mechanical sounding bang---it might be the compensator---loose or broken/tired spring.

My 2007 Deluxe does the same thing. Search the forum and you'll discover that it's most likely normal.

My 2009 Fatboy has the same loud thud when I start it. It's a bit annoying but I've read it's normal. Can't quite recall the reasoning though... something with the starter and using cheaper parts maybe?

That's normal for the stock compensator, if you upgrade to the Screamin' Eagle one, it goes away (heavy duty spring etc).

Its the compensator. Install the SE comp. Hours of reading on the subject. Thats why its a stock part for 2011 models.

I have the same 2009 FLSTC with 30,000 miles on it when that same problem surfaced. The compensator springs went out of spec from being compressed at start up and HD did the work as my bike was still under the original warranty. It would have cost $640 if I had waited and the warranty expired. I have not heard the sound since.
